What Are LED Display Modules

500x1000mm RA Series LED Panels

An LED display module is a self-contained, fundamental building block of larger LED display screens, such as video walls, digital billboards, and public signage. It is a compact unit that integrates all the necessary components to display a portion of an image or video.

In essence, LED display modules make it easier to design and implement large-scale LED video walls and dynamic visual display systems. Because they come as ready-to-use components. You don’t need to assemble individual LEDs and components yourself.

Modular & Scalable Design

Panels can be combined to create displays of any size or aspect ratio.

Long Lifespan

Stable performance for 100,000 hours of operation.

Durable & Weather-Resistant

Outdoor modules offer protection against rain, dust, and harsh conditions (IP-rated).

Easy Maintenance

Front or rear-access designs simplify repairs and module replacement.

Categories By Packaging Technology

SMD Modules

Surface Mount Device (SMD) modules are the most common type, featuring small LEDs mounted directly on the circuit board.

Best For: The most versatile option, used for both high-resolution Indoor Video Walls and modern Outdoor Displays with smaller pitches.

GOB Modules

Glue-on-Board(GOB) . An enhancement applied to standard SMD modules. After assembly, a thick layer of special protective glue or resin is applied over the front surface of the LEDs.

Best For: rental/staging displays, fine-pitch displays or billboards.

COB Modules

Chip-on-Board (COB) modules. The bare LED chips are mounted directly onto the PCB substrate and then sealed under a single, unified layer of protective resin or epoxy.

Best For: Premium, indoor displays requiring the absolute highest resolution and durability

How to Select the Right Module

Choosing the appropriate LED display module requires considering several key factors to ensure optimal performance for your specific application

Define the Environment and Protection Needs

Indoor vs. Outdoor:

  • Outdoor modules need high brightness (5000+ nits) for sunlight visibility and a high IP rating (e.g., IP65) for weather protection.
  • Indoor modules require lower brightness and no IP rating, focusing on detail for close-up viewing.

Action: Choose the right brightness and IP rating based on your installation location.

Select the Optimal Pixel Pitch (P)

Pixel Pitch (P in mm) is the distance between the centers of adjacent pixels, and it dictates the clarity and optimal viewing distance of the screen.

  • Minimum Viewing Distance(meters) ≈ Pixel Pitch(mm).
  • Example: For an audience viewing from 3 meters away, a P3mm or smaller module is ideal.

Action: Measure the closest and furthest expected viewing distance and choose the corresponding Pixel Pitch.

Specify Performance and Budget

Once the physical requirements are met, optimize the module for video quality and cost.

  • Size of the display and installation constraints
  • Refresh rate and resolution
  • Balance quality with budget

The best choice depends on where the display will be used, how it will be viewed. And most importantly, match your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about LED display modules

Pixel pitch depends on the viewing distance. Smaller pixel pitches (e.g., 1.2–3mm) are ideal for close-up viewing, while larger pitches (e.g., 6–10mm+) work well for long-distance or outdoor displays.

High-quality LED modules typically last 50,000–100,000 hours, depending on usage and environmental conditions.

Outdoor modules are IP65-rated or higher, protecting against rain, dust, and harsh weather.

Modules are designed for easy front or rear access, making maintenance, cleaning, and replacement simple and fast.
